The Suzuki Savage does not have a high speed chassis set up. The steering is very quick and the bike gets jostled around from buffeting winds and even normal body positioning movements. The Savage is a fun bike at low speeds and around town, but does not compare to better road bikes at speeds above 70mph. I switch weekly from my Savage to my Yamah Virago 750cc V twin.
The Virago (a light weight cruser too) has very slow steering; much different from the Savage. The Virago sits just as low and isn't much heavier. It is also easy to man handle and is a fun bike too. The Virago feels much more secure and much more steady at speeds over 70, in winds, etc.
In conclusion don't spend your time an effort trying to make the Savage faster! It is a starter bike that has a great personality. I will keep mine as my mechanical friend. The Virago is better, for traveling with the guys. The Savage is a put-put go by your self bike.
